This poem composed in memory of a friend. Even though I’ve not seen Russell in over twenty years, these verses came streaming out. I think about our eighth-grade year at a small Christian school and what his friendship meant to me. Russell battled cancer for several years. He died this week. Russell finished well and with great courage. He touched so many in his life and will be missed by a lot of people.

Know you’re there, see His face.
Said that prayer, have his grace.
Beat us there, save a seat.
Home friend, race complete!

Mind returns, days gone by.
Basketball, sprinting times.
Hart’s class, Falcon friends.
Growing years, far from then.

So much love, prayers for you.
Finishing well, inspired anew.
Rest now brother, battles done.
Glory shining, blazing Son.
